I want to start a new segment on my blog that highlights TedTalks that I LOVE.
This week, I want to talk about How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime by Nadine Burke Harris.
Harris is a doctor who shares her perspective on a major public health crisis- trauma. This trauma, specifically in childhood, can largely impact a person’s health due to the toxic stress associated. Doctors who are aware of these impacts will be better suited to treat their patients who are victims of childhood trauma.
Trauma is often a part of child abuse and neglect. This is a subject that is very near-and-dear to my heart. Traumatic events in childhood include things like having for a mentally-ill parent or going through a nasty divorce. The stress put on these children’s bodies leaves a lasting impact on their health. We have to protect our children and take this seriously.
